5/5 ★

I gave this book 5/5 stars because I found nothing wrong with it. It was delightful to read and went by quickly although it was written in verse. I found it extremely interesting that it was written in verse because the syntax used greatly impacted the importance and meaning of the content. I also am glad because I think the author had the best time being as creative as she liked with the way she wrote the book. It is a coming-of-age story of a young girl in a time of war trying to find herself. She must choose between the falsified life she loves or the painful life she comes from. The story also explores familial relationships and the undesirable effects that come from suppressing emotions. I would like to think the book centres on a mother's love as well, seeing as that is what the main character desires and bases her ideas on most. I am Kavi was informational as well as it was written to take place during the civil war between Sri Lankans and a group of Tamilians. Although it seems historical, it didn't seem like boring or unnecessary content.

Recommendation

I would recommend this to young readers because I think it introduces some important topics that need to be talked about. I also think it's good that there are boundaries in the book and romance was never offered up. I definitely think if you are Indian or Sri Lankan you should read this book because you can identify with the main character more easily
